“Forum Theatre” was the key concept stemmed from the “Theatre of the Oppressed”, a type of theatre created by the innovative and influential Brazilian Augusto Boal. Boal created Forum theatre as a forum for teaching people how to change their world. In this process the actors or audience members could stop a performance, often a short scene in which a character was being oppressed in some way. The audience would suggest different actions for the actors to carry out on-stage in an attempt to change the outcome of what they were seeing.
Nowadays, forum theatre has been widely applied in corporate learning development, social and community transformation, family relations and in education sectors.
Participants engage in warm up games to break the ice in the new training environment and with each other.
Story sharing Through theatre games, participants form pairs and small groups, and start to share stories, from daily life to work life stories, both stories of happiness and stories of challenges and conflicts.
Analyze “conflict” and rehearsal Trainers guide the participants to analyze their conflict stories generated from work. Participants come up with detailed script, character, and rehearse the conflict scenes for drama performance.
Show time! Participants perform the dramas. In each performance, there are interactions between performers and audience, who will step into shoes of different roles, and they will explore different possibilities to resolve the conflicts and get instant feedback. Whether the staged conflict could be resolved or not, the discussion is valuable as it opens possibilities and empower participants.
Debriefing: consolidate the reflections into learning points. Discussion on the steps, choices, thoughts and expressions that happen during the forum and the insights it brings to the participants. How the learning can be applied to work for particular conflicts and for other conflicts is the key focus.
